Bangladesh

The flag was adopted on January 25, 1972.  Th green of the flag represents the land.  The red symbolizes the struggle for independence.

       Bangladesh is a relatively new country.  They gained their independence on December 16, 1971 from Pakistan.  The Turks first established rule in the Bengal region in 1202.  In 1906, the All-India Muslim League was formed.  In 1952 there were major language riots when Urdu was declared the national language.  Later in 1954, Bengali was made the joint official language.  In 1971 the Awami League was outlawed and martial law was declared in East Pakistan.  The Awami League then declared East Pakistan independent and named it Bangladesh.  India aided the Bangladesh Liberation Army and forced the Pakistani Army to surrender, thus making Bangladesh a free nation.
