Kuwait
The Kuwaiti flag was adopted September 7, 1961 after gaining independence from the British. The black represents the defeat of the enemy. Red symbolizes the blood of the enemy. White is for purity an green is for fertility. The idea for this flag is rumored to have come from the flag that Iraq used until the latter part of the 1950s.
Kuwait has had independence since 1710, but has been under British rule from the late eighteenth century until 1961. The next year the country, now free from British rule, adopted a constitutional monarchy. By 1963 Kuwait had joined that United Nations. Kuwait then enjoyed several prosperous years, their wealth growing to enormous amounts due to the oil fields that the country rested upon and was pumping out to educate and feed its citizens. Then terror struck. Early one morning of 1990 Saddam Hussein of Iraq invaded Kuwait. Thanks to the quick actions of the international coalition forces Saddam was pushed back into Kuwait, thus ending the Persian Gulf War. Once again in 1992 Saddam claimed Kuwait as a Iraqi province, but the U.N. security council reaffirmed the border and Kuwait was again allowed to continue on with its life. Finally Iraq recognized the independence of Kuwait and agreed upon the boundaries.
