In 1159 the Nemanja Dynasty began.  Later in 1220 Stefan Nemanja was crowned the first king of Serbia.  In 1878 Serbia regained their independence from the Ottoman Empire with help from Russia.  Then, during the Balkan Wars, Serbia was able to gain control of most of the Ottoman Empire possessions in Europe.  Shortly after the Balkan Wars Austria declared war on Serbia beginning the Great War in 1914.  After the end of the war in 1918, the Kingdom of the Serbs,  Croats, and Slovenes was formed.  That kingdom was later renamed Yugoslavia in 1929. In 1989, Slobadon Milosevic became the president of Serbia.  Milosevic is a Serbian nationalist.  Croatia and Slovenia declared their independence from Yugoslavia in 1991.  When Milosevic didn't win the election in 1996 protests and demonstrations ensued.  A year later, Milosevic was elected the new president of Yugoslavia.
